This issue is dedicated to the 75th Jubilee of the National Science Center “Kharkov
Institute of Physics and Technology” and to the 70th Anniversary of the first in the USSR
experiment on atomic nucleus splitting. The history of the NSC KIPT started on 16 May 1928,
when the decision was taken to set up the Ukrainian Institute of Physics and Technology. Four
years later, on 10 October 1932, the scientists-enthusiasts, whose names are now carved on the
monument shown in the photograph below, performed a successful experiment on lithium
nucleus disintegration. This experiment appeared to be a significant milestone in the
development of nuclear physics and charged particle accelerators in the USSR. Time has shown
that this event went far beyond a special investigation and gave a powerful impetus to a variety
of related scientific directions.
The articles by scientists from the NSC KIPT and the Russian Federal Nuclear Center
submitted to the jubilee issue describe the landmarks of scientific search and the present-day
fundamental and applied investigations.
