Yanchevski i is 70 ∗ (dedicated to 70th Birthday) Vyacheslav Ivanovich Yanchevskii, a member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, was born in Minsk on July 9, 1948. In 1955 he entered the secondary school no 27. Already in his school years he was seriously interested in mathematics and in 1963 passed to a well-known in Minsk school no 50. Then it was the only specialized secondary school of physical and mathematical profile in Minsk. In 1964 V.I. Yanchevskii entered the boarding school no 18 of physical and mathematical profile at the Moscow State University (now it is the Kolmogorov school, a specialized educational and scientific center of the MSU) and graduated from this school in 1966. This school was created by the initiative of prominent scientists A.N. Kolmogorov, I.K. Kikoin and I.G. Petrovskii in order to ∗Originally published in the Institute of Mathematics of NAS of Belarus jour- nal “Trudy Instituta matematiki”, 26 (2018), no. 1. An authorized translation by I. D. There the teachers taught to think and they took care on the personal development of each pupil. In 1966 V.I. Yanchevskii entered the mathematical faculty of the Belarusian State University (BSU) and graduated with honours in 1971. He started an active research still being a student. Having completed his Ph.D. studies earlier than it was planned, since 1974 Vyacheslav Ivanovich has been working at the Institute of Mathematics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NAS of Belarus). Here he has passed a way from a junior researcher to the head of the algebra department (since 1993). In 1974 he has defended a candidate (Ph.D.) thesis with the theme “The structure of the classical groups over finite dimensional skew fields” (V.P. Platonov, a member of the Russian and Belarusian Academies of Sciences, was his scientific advisor) and in 1980 he has defended a Doct. Sci. thesis with the theme “Reduced unitary K-theory”. (Doctor of Sciences is the highest scientific degree in the Soviet Union and some of new independent states that were parts of the USSR.) In 1990 V.I. Yanchevskii was assigned a professor title, in 2009 he was elected a corresponding member and in 2014 a full member of the NAS of Belarus. V.I. Yanchevskii is a scientist with a world name, a major expert in algebraic geometry and algebra. The main fields of his research interests are the theory of anisotropic algebraic groups, the algebraic geometry of varieties of small dimension, the theory of Brauer groups of fields and algebraic varieties, algebraic K-theory, and the theory of finite dimensional algebras. Vyacheslav Ivanovich’s research yields a substantial contribution to the progress of these fields: he has created reduced unitary and spinor K-theories. Not long ago he has obtained a number of profound and in many respects unexpected results that have led to a solution of two old and well-known problems of algebraic geometry. Jointly with A. Wardsworth (University of California-Berkeley, the USA) V.I. Yanchevskii has elab- orated the reduced unitary K-theory of anisotropic Hermitian forms of graduated division algebras which completed perennial research of a num- ber of well-known experts from Germany, the USA, Great Britain, and Russia. Using algebro-geometric methods, he together with U. Rehmann (University of Bielefeld, Germany) and S.V. Tikhonov has solved the prob- lem of the embeddability of arbitrary Adzumaya algebras into cyclic ones with the same indices and exponents that has not been solved for 40 years. Recently V.I. Yanchevskii has established the cyclicity of central simple algebras over the function field of a projective plane with the ramification in conics, cubics, and quadrics and has proved the existence of scalar “adm-n3” — 2018/10/20 — 9:02 — page E — #5 Dedicated to 70th Birthday E extensions that are the function fields of certain Severy-Brauer varieties over which algebras have prescribed properties (are the twisted products with fixed Galois groups, preserve the indices, have fixed exponents). Vyacheslav Ivanovich is the author of more than 200 publications, including articles in leading mathematical journals (“Doklady Akademii nauk”, “Izvestiya Rossiiskoi akademii nauk. Seriya matematicheskaya”, “Zapiski nauchnyh seminarov POMI”, “Proceedings of the Amer. Math. Soc.”, “Transactions of the Amer. Math. Soc.”, “Journal of Algebra”, “Com- munications in Algebra”, “Manuscripta Mathematica”, “Bulletin of the Belgian Mathematical Society”, “Algebra and Discrete mathematics”, etc). V.I. Yanchevskii is quite active in an international scientific collab- oration. He was the belarusian coordinator or the head of a number of international projects supported by the European Commission, INTAS, and the Belarusian Republican Foundation for Fundamental Research, many times he was invited for joint research to scientific centers of Ger- many, Belgium, Switzerland, and Israel, gave talks on numerous important international mathematical meetings including International congresses of mathematicians (Madrid, 2006, Hyderabad, 2010, and Seoul, 2014) and European mathematical congresses (Budapest, 1996 and Krakow, 2012). Nowadays the importance of algebra (and especially, algebraic geom- etry) for solving information defence problems grows quickly. This is caused by using more and more complicated algebraic structures in mod- ern and perspective cryptosystems. V.I. Yanchevskii was a supervisor of a number of applied projects on information defense that were successfully implemented in the framework of special state programs. Vyacheslav Ivanovich spares much time and attention to teaching at the BSU. He had been the head of the chair of geometry, topology and the methodology of teaching mathematics at this university for more than 20 years, now he is the scientific supervisor of this chair and a member of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of the university. He has developed many original special courses on different topics in algebra and algebraic geometry based on his own programs. The level of the students’ mathematical culture, of their understanding of fundamental notions is always very important for Vyacheslav Ivanovich. That is why together with his colleagues he has written two seminal textbooks: “Introduction into mathematics” (jointly with S.G. Kononov and R.I. Tyshkevich) and “The basics of affine geometry” (jointly with S.G. Kononov, A.V. Prokopchuk, and T.V. Tikhonova). V.I. Yanchevskii has prepared 12 candidates of Sciences (Ph.D.). He has many scientific-organizational activities, for many years he heads a “adm-n3” — 2018/10/20 — 9:02 — page F — #6 F V. I. Yanchevski i is 70 specialized council for thesis defense at the Institute of Mathematics of the NAS of Belarus. He is a member of the Scientific council of the Be- larusian Republican Foundation for Fundamental Research, of editorial boards of the journals “Trudy Instituta matematiki” (“Proceedings of the Institute of Mathematics”), “Vesti NAN Belarusi. Seryya fiz.-mat. navuk” (“Proceedings of the NAS of Belarus. A series of physical and mathemat- ical sciences”), and “Algebra and Discrete Mathematics”, a member of the Editorial commission and of the section of technical, physical, and mathematical sciences in the Premium commission of the NAS of Belarus. Vyacheslav Ivanovich is a laureate of the NAS of Belarus prize (2008), he was awarded the badge “For excellence in education in Belarus”, and was assigned the title “A honored worker of the BSU”. V.I. Yanchevskii is respected not only at the Institute of Mathematics, but in many research centers in different countries as well where research in algebra is conducted. This is a man of a broad erudition, he is fond of history, literature, and music. Vyacheslav Ivanovich always takes care on the growth of the professional qualifications and the cultural level of young collaborators in the department of algebra. In the jubilee day colleagues wish Vyacheslav Ivanovich to have good health, new nice results and conjectures, talented and motivated pupils, and good luck! N. A. Izobov, V. V. Gorokhovik, Yu. S.
