P r e fa c e
This issue o f the journal contains papers selected from contributions presented
during the 5th International C onference M ateria ls S tructure & M icrom echanics o f
F racture (M SM F-5), Brno, C zech R epublic, June 2 7 -2 9 , 2007.
The first conference o f the M SM F series w as held in Brno, June 1995. The
participants decided to repeat such conferences in Brno each three years. The basic idea
w as to establish a periodical international forum presenting m ultiscale approaches in
fatigue and fracture o f materials. Therefore, respective sections focused on atomistic
m odels, m odels based on crystal defects, num erical and statistical m odels based on
continuum m echanics, advanced experim ental m ethods and relationships betw een
structure and m echanical properties appeared during the M SM F-2 conference in 1998. In
particular, the pow er o f atom istic and m esoscop ic approaches in fracture w as clearly
demonstrated by participants at the M SM F-3 m eeting in 2001. The v iew o f m ultiscale
approaches in m odeling deform ation and fracture has created the framework o f the
M SM F-4 conference in 2004.
The conference M SM F-5 has successfu lly curried on the tradition o f previous
conferences. N early 180 scientists from 27 countries all over the w orld presented a variety
o f fundamental relations betw een structural and m echanical characteristics o f materials. In
collaboration w ith the International A dvisory Board, the organizers asked Prof. V. Vitek
(U niversity o f Pennsylvania, U S A ), Prof. J. W. Morris (U niversity o f California, U SA ),
Prof. H. Mughrabi (U niversity o f Erlangen-Nurnberg, Germany), Dr. P. Lukas (Institute o f
Physics o f Materials, A cadem y o f Sciences, C zech R epublic), Prof. R. Pippan (Erich
Schm id Institute o f M aterials Science, Austria) and Prof. Y. Kondo (K yushu University,
Japan) to prepare plenary key-note lectures. A dditional top scientists w ere asked to g ive
key-notes in sections.
It is m y pleasure to thank the editorial board o f the journal for the readiness to
publish this volum e devoted to M SM F-5. I w ould also like to thank all m em bers o f the
Organizing Committee, members o f the International A dvisory Board, session chairpersons
as w ell as m any colleagues w ho helped in the preparation o f the conference and,
particularly, in the preparation o f the Proceedings.
