Preface
This issue o f the journal contains papers selected from contributions
presented during the jo in t Hungarian-Ukrainian-Bulgarian Conference “Safety,
Reliability, and Risks o f Engineering Plants and Com ponents” was held on M ay
22-25 in Varna, Bulgaria.
The Conference was initiated by the Bay Zoltan Institute for Logistics and
Production Systems (Miskolc, Hungary), Pisarenko Institute o f Problems of
Strength o f the National Academ y o f Sciences o f Ukraine (Kiev), Balevski
Institute o f M etal Science o f the Bulgarian Academ y o f Sciences and supported
by the National Academ y o f Sciences o f Ukraine, the Bulgarian and Hungarian
Academies o f Sciences. The Balevski Institute o f M etal Science o f the Bulgarian
Academ y o f Sciences was the organizer o f the Conference. A t the same time,
there was held the X IV International Colloquium “M echanical Fatigue of
M etals.” The official language o f both the Conference and the Colloquium was
English.
The goal o f the Conference was the development o f cooperation between
Eastern European countries on the issues concerning the assessment o f the
strength and life o f reactor pressure vessels, critical elements o f nuclear power
plant equipment, materials used in pow er engineering and transport engineering
industries.
The papers presented at the Conference “Safety, Reliability, and Risks of
Engineering Plants and Com ponents” and the Colloquium “M echanical Fatigue o f
M etals” are also published in the International journal “M aterials Science and
Technology” (Bulgaria) and International scientific and technical journal
“Reliability and Life o f M achines and Structures” published by the Pisarenko
Institute o f Problems o f Strength o f the National Academ y o f Sciences o f Ukraine
(Kiev, Ukraine).
As has been proposed by Prof. L. Toth, the next Conference “Safety,
Reliability, and Risks o f Engineering Plants and Com ponents” is to be held in
2009 in Hungary and the X V Colloquium on the M echanical Fatigue o f Metals in
2011 in Opole, Poland.
