Nuclear and Radiation SafetySummary: | An analysis of the neutron flux density dynamics registered by the detection unit of the Chornobyl Shelter nuclear safety monitoring system installed directly in the neutron breeding medium of the main vertical flow of lava-like fuel-containing materials located in the 4th steam dump valve was performed. The neutron breeding medium and the materials are located in the southwestern part of the reactor shaft base plate that was destroyed by the beyond design basis accident at Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant Unit 4. A physical model of the lava-like fuel-containing materials cluster in the 4th steam dump valve has been developed. The results of model and experimental studies of the neutronic characteristics of this cluster are presented. The connection between the dynamics of the neutron flux density and the temperature-humidity regime in the Shelter after the installation of the New Safe Confinement is presented. Based on modelling and analysis of the observed neutron flux density, it was concluded that the possibility of criticality in the volume of the steam dump valve is unlikely to occur. |
